The goal of this exercise is to consider how information is processed differently when listening compared with reading.
  1. First, visit the UNC Writing Center’s web site, and read the “About” page (writingcenter.unc.edu/about) aloud to a partner.
  2. When the reading is finished, the listener will,  from memory, write down a list of the services that the Writing Center offers.
  3. Then, both the reader and the listener should reread the “About” page and compare the generated list to the description there by answering the following questions:
  • How does the listener’s list compare to the services that the Writing Center actually offers?
  • Which services are missing from the list?
  • Are any additional services listed that aren’t described in the text?
  • How does the order of the listener’s list compare to the order of the text?
  • How did the way in which the paragraphs were read influence what the listener remembered?
